Why Whey Protein?
Whey Protein is unquestionably the most complete protein source available in food. It contains all the essential amino acids necessary for growth and repair of muscle tissue. The human body needs amino acids for help grow and repair muscle tissue, synthesize enzymes and provide energy. Additionally it is in a form that is easily digested by the human body and scores low in the Glycemic Index (GI). The combination of these benefits means that Whey Protein scores higher than any other protein source on the 3 most important scoring systems measuring the nutritional value of proteins:
- Protein Digestibility Amino Acid Score (PDCAAS) is the gold standard in evaluating proteins and endorsed by the WHO and the U.S Food and Drug Administration. Whey Protein scores higher than any other protein on a PDCASS score.
- Biological Value (BV). Whey protein also scores highest of all protein sources on the BV score
- Protein Efficiency Ratio (PER) again Whey Protein beats all other protein sources.
Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey is only made from the purest most natural sources of whey protein.
Are All Whey Proteins The Same?
Unquestionably not. Gold Standard Whey is made firstly from Whey Protein Isolate (WPI). Many Whey Proteins are made from lower value Whey Protein Concentrates and even very low grade Whey Protein Powder. These deliver significantly lower protein per serving and will inevitably contain higher levels of lactose and fat. Secondly the heat treatment is a critical element of the whey protein process. Too much heat treatment denatures the protein and damages its nutritional value. With Gold Standard 100% Whey you get Whey Protein Isolate (WPI) blended with Whey Protein Concentrate 80 (WPC80).

Good but pricey Cant argue that gold standard is a good protein but there are others out there and its become just too pricey for me. Kevin
Great price, great taste, great quality!!! Your Review (submitted on 3 January 2013): Having used many different protein powders in the past I would have to say that the Optimum Nutrition brand beats all comers for taste, price and overall quality. I have tried both 'Mocha Cappuccino' and chocolate flavor now and am eager to try more. It mixes well with both water and milk leaving none of those annoying lumps. And lastly the protein is of elite quality. The best way to prove this is to go straight to the label. The first ingredients are Whey Isolate, Whey Concentrate, and Whey Peptides. The isolate is the purest form of whey meaning that what you're taking is almost all protein, no other filler. This is perfect for someone trying to cut because it still allows you to get the protein for synthesis in your muscles without the other things you don't want. The Whey peptides are hydrolyzed which in short eliminates some steps that your body would normally have to take to break down the protein. This in turn decreases the time of consumption to absorption. Many resources and bodybuilders seem to believe that the faster that your body can begin to synthesize proteins to repair after a workout the better. The final clue is how much protein do you really get as a ratio of the serving. One serving which is one scoop contains 33g total and 24g of protein. This means that 72% of the serving is protein. This is a very significant stat because many other protein powders look identical to this until you calculate this ratio. Although no protein powder can just magically give you the results you want I believe this is the best one available to supplement your normal diet and exercise routine. Barry
